 REFLECTION

Through the research I did for this blog, I gained a deeper understanding of the play-based approach, which was introduced by Friedrich Froebel. This approach emphasizes learning not only through reading but also through meaningful play. I discovered how materials like building blocks, puppets, sensory trays, and musical instruments support holistic development. For example, boosting creativity, communication, literacy, and numeracy in children. Compared to traditional teaching, this method feels more fun, active, and child-centred.

While working on my blog, I had to consider the layout and create an attractive title to catch the audience’s attention, so it wouldn’t look boring or distracting. Although it was quite challenging for me since it was my first time creating and designing a blog in a creative way but the process was very satisfying and meaningful. This experience not only improved my digital literacy but also strengthened my passion for creating inclusive and engaging learning environments for young children.

Through the research I did for this blog, I understood that play is not only enjoyable; it is a potent tool for children's learning, as I have discovered when investigating Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) using a play-based approach. It promotes their growth in all areas, including cognitive, physical, emotional, and social. I've witnessed how children may freely explore, solve problems, and express themselves through child-led, practical activities. This method respects the uniqueness, history, and learning preferences of every child. It has made it clearer to me that my job as a teacher is to watch, mentor, and support learning, not to dictate it. Children flourish and develop at their own rate in a joyful, safe, and inclusive atmosphere that is fostered by play-based learning.

After doing this research, I realised that play is not just about having fun it is actually one of the best ways for young children to learn. Before this, I didn’t fully understand how powerful play can be in helping children grow, especially in areas like thinking skills, communication, and problem-solving. I used to think play was something we just give children after they finish their “real” learning, but now I understand that play is the real learning. What I found most interesting is how teachers in the play-based approach are more like guides or supporters. They don’t control what the child does but observe and help when needed. This really changed how I see the role of a teacher. It’s not just about teaching facts, but creating a space where children feel free to explore and learn at their own pace. I also learned how important the classroom setup is. A simple thing like how the tables, toys, or books are arranged can actually affect how a child plays and learns. Now, I pay more attention to how learning spaces are designed. This assignment really opened my eyes. It made me think more deeply about how I want to support children in the future not by forcing them to follow rules or fixed lessons, but by understanding what they enjoy and giving them the space to grow naturally. I feel more confident now in using play as a teaching tool, and I’m excited to try this approach in my future career.

Working on this blog helped me understand how meaningful play is in early childhood education. At first, I thought play was mostly just for fun but through my research and writing, I now see how it supports important skills like creativity, problem-solving and emotional growth. Writing the “Pros and Cons” section made me think more critically about both the strengths and the challenges of this approach. I also learned how important it is to plan and structure play properly, and how skilled teachers can make a big difference. While creating the blog, I also developed digital skills, such as organizing content, designing visuals, and formatting the post to make it more engaging and easier to read. I enjoyed seeing how our group blog came together with each member contributing their part. This experience gave me more confidence in using play as a teaching tool and in presenting information creatively online.
